3 Tips for Wearing a Bow Tie

Brides: if your groom is wearing a bow tie for your wedding (or thinking about it), don’t miss this post! Today we’re sharing three tips for wearing a bow tie so he can rock one in style. We’re also sharing inspiration, showing you how to tie a bow tie, and we’re giving away a bow tie and suspenders set to one lucky reader from Element Boutique! It’s all inside…

3 Tips for Wearing a Bow Tie (photo: paige and blake green photography)

Tips for Wearing a Bow Tie

1. Wear a bow tie only if the style suits you.

Don’t wear a bow tie just because it’s “in” or a trend; wear one if it actually suits your style (and you feel comfortable wearing one).

2. Pick a color that coordinates with your palette.

If you’re not into a bright or poppy pattern, pick a solid bow tie for your wedding. A black bow tie paired with a white button down shirt and suit is a classic look that’s always in style.

photo: brumley & wells via style me pretty

Also, don’t let the bow tie be a distraction: if you’re wearing a suit jacket or button down shirt that has a bold pattern, go neutral on the bow tie. Likewise, if your attire is more subtle, select a more striking bow tie. If you’re selecting bow ties for groomsmen, coordinate their ties with the bridesmaid dresses.

3. Learn how to tie it before the ceremony.

Practice tying the bow tie before the big day. Here’s a handy guide to help:

The Wedding Bow Tie Guide

Good morning! Happy Friday! Yesterday we talked about creative wedding alternatives and today we’re talking about a fun twist for the groom: the bow tie. The bow tie is a classic look – think Sinatra, Bond, or Astaire – and if you’re a fan of this dapper style you’ll love today’s post. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite bow ties from around the web to inspire you. Find out where to buy a handmade wedding bow tie, how to tie one on, 5 Do’s and Don’t’s of bow ties, and more. Enjoy!

The Wedding Bow Tie Guide

What is a bow tie? A bow tie is a style of necktie typically worn by men and is formed by loops on either end. Some bow ties are formed and ready to wear, while others require a particular type of tying technique. I know nothing about the TV show ‘Doctor Who’, but when some character mentioned bow ties were ‘cool’ according to Wikipedia their popularity began to soar. I doubt it is narrowed down to a ‘trend’, but rather the epitome of classic style. Just ask Bond. James Bond.

Handmade Bow Ties

When shopping for a bow tie, consider handmade bow ties! They’re totally unique, handmade just for you, and available in plenty of styles and patters. Have you heard of Southern Beaus? They offer a variety of handmade wedding bow ties featuring prints, stripes, and even thematic styles. This ‘Carolina Red’ wedding bow tie is one of our favorites from their collection:

If floral is more your style, consider one of these whimsical wedding bow tie patterns discovered at This Humble Abode:

Don’t forget another classic staple: the pocket square! The folks at Zelma Rose offer an amazing selection of wedding bow tie styles and coordinating pocket squares for the groom…

5 Do’s and Don’t’s of the Wedding Bow Tie

1. DO wear a bow tie if you like the style.

Not scared to rock a bow tie down the aisle? Know you can pull it off? You go, groom. A bow tie is a great way to accentuate your personal style and isn’t considered ‘just a trend’ when done right. This means if it’s a style that makes you comfortable, go for it!

2. DON’T force groomsmen to necessarily follow suit.

Just because the groom wants to wear a bow tie doesn’t mean his groomsmen will be as keen. The groomsmen don’t have to match the groom; in fact, it makes the groom stand out a little more when the others opt for traditional neckties instead. Here’s an example:

3. DO coordinate + complement.

Wear a bow tie that coordinates with your attire and / or complements your wedding theme. For a nautical wedding, we love the idea of incorporating a bow tie like this ‘Anchors Away’ style by Southern Beaus:

nautical wedding bow tie

4. DON’T make your groom wear a bow tie if he doesn’t want to…

If the groom didn’t select your gown for you, why select his attire? He shouldn’t have to wear a bow tie if he doesn’t want to… likewise, if he wants to wear one, encourage him.

5. DON’T forget to learn how to tie it!

Don’t arrive at your ceremony without a few bow tie lessons first! (Your best man may have no idea, either.) Here’s a handy guide to help you get started:
