Should I wear a second wedding dress for my reception?” This is a question that rolled in from Shannon the other day and we couldn’t wait to answer it for her. Emma here and today we’re talking about if you need a reception dress for your wedding. I like the idea of reception dresses — a dressy but not overly formal second wedding dress the bride changes into after the ceremony. But to be totally and completely honest, as I always am here, you really only need a reception dress if you want one. Some reasons why a bride might wear a reception dress is if she thinks her wedding gown is too big or poofy, perhaps uncomfortable, or may get in the way of dancing throughout the night. In these cases, I say go for it! On the other hand, if you love your wedding gown and can picture yourself wearing it all day and all night, a reception dress isn’t a requirement by any means. As with all wedding decisions, the choice is totally up to you! If you want to wear a second dress for your wedding, I urge you to consider affordable options. Your wedding dress is likely one of the biggest expenses for your wedding and a second dress for your reception doesn’t have to break the bank (especially when you consider the small amount of time it will be worn). With that being said, we’ve gathered up some beautiful and surprisingly affordable reception dresses for you to consider. Oh, and another thing to consider are these wedding shoe mistakes to avoid, but that’s another topic for another day. Now, on to the dresses!

Beautiful Rochester New York Wedding: Jenna + John | Married!

Meet John and Jenna! They are an awesome couple and friends of ours. Their October wedding was a beautiful experience that happened at the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, New York. There are many gorgeous details and magical moments captured by their photographer Justin from 375 Photography. Their wedding reception took place in the school’s chapel which was both holy and magnificent. After saying I do, John and Jenna walked through the prestigious halls of the school while guests waved ribbon wands and celebrated their marriage. John and Jenna’s wedding had a classic theme thorough their decor. We loved their centerpieces, which included small white pumpkins (perfect for fall) and a combination of mercury glass votive candles and baby’s breath in tall vases. Before dinner, guests enjoyed touching speeches from family and friends; after dinner, dancing ensued, along with a party that people will never forget. We’re so excited to share their photos with you! In addition to their unbelievable photos, you’ll find a video captured by the team at Roc Focus. If you watch the video you’ll get the chance to see their entire day from start to finish. The love Jenna and John have for one another and their amazing wedding moments await your eager eyes…

Real Weddings: Brooklyn Arts Center in Downtown Wilmington

When you have a stunning couple like Mallory and Travis gracing the blog and photographer Eric Boneske behind the lens, you just know it’s going to be a stunning Real Wedding! Their wedding was held at the Brooklyn Arts Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. This venue boasts exceptional architecture including 50-foot cathedral ceilings, original brick walls, and stained glass windows, just to name a few. It’s a vintage wedding dream come true! They chose a soft coral color palette infused with pops of blush and orange, along with coordinating botanical decor and paper goods. I especially love their elegant ceremony decor including mason jar vases along the aisle and a pallet-turned-sign which read “Come as you are, stay as long as you can, we’re all family here, so no seating plan“. It is easily one of my favorite handmade wedding details this year. I adore the bridesmaids’ mismatched dresses in shades of pink, the string lights which served as an elegant ceremony backdrop, and the rustically modern wedding cake. The inspiration begins below…

Fun and Elegant Kentucky Wedding (Real Weddings)

Casey and Rhonda’s fun Kentucky wedding was an absolute blast! You’ll love all the emotions flowing from this cute couple’s day. This wedding’s beautiful details include blush color bridesmaid dresses, the bride’s blue ring, an immaculate church ceremony, and best wishes from guests written on wooden blocks. Their fun Kentucky wedding was captured by Raven from YouAreRaven Photography. See all the photos and find out more…

Fun Kentucky Wedding

Raven tells us, “Casey & Rhonda are two of the most real and kind people I’ve ever met. (And that’s saying a TON, because all of my clients are both amazing and nice.) They brought my second shooter, Sooji, and myself out to their little corner of the world, Philpot, Kentucky, for their Friendship Baptist Church wedding. Philpot, for those of you who don’t know, is home to some amazing properties and views, and close to some really awesome barbecue {and I’m obsessed with BBQ}. Everything about their wedding felt like them. It was elegant, and natural, and real to who they were; seemingly effortless, and adorable. They kept us giggling the whole time, and even protected us from snakes like some kind of formally dressed superheroes.”

“They also set up a pinata for the kids during the reception! The first dance was played by the bride’s brother on acoustic guitar, many of the getting ready images were taken in the bride’s home, and the post-wedding shots were taken on the bride’s property where Casey proposed to Rhonda!”

Elkridge Club Wedding: Rig + Danielle

Rig and Danielle’s Elkridge Club wedding in Baltimore was magnificent! Their wedding has a classic feeling and elegant theme. Dennis Drenner Photographs captured their wedding and all of its personal, intimate moments. Read on to find out more and enjoy the photos…

Elkridge Club Wedding

Dennis tells us, “Rig and Danielle are an interesting match and a great example of opposites attracting. She is a real Montana cowgirl, while he is the scion of an old Baltimore family, but they get along like crabs and Old Bay seasoning! (in case you’re not from the Mid-Atlantic, that means they get along great!)”

“The ceremony was held on a beautiful Fall day at the Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore. Afterwards, we got outside for some quick portraits in the last light of the day. Just as I began to do Rig and Danielle’s portraits, a blaze of amber light burst from behind the clouds, sending me into an excited (and productive) photo-frenzy.”

“Afterwards we all headed to the reception, held at the Elkridge Club. A former fox hunting club once in the outskirts of old Baltimore, the Elkridge Club is now very much inside of the city — but still surrounded by beautiful grounds and now a golf course. Guests enjoyed cocktails overlooking the 9th hole as the sun sunk beneath the horizon and the band starting tuning up their instruments.”

“Much merriment ensued, beautiful cowgirls danced with dapper young lawyers, the bride and groom were both well-roasted in some hilarious wedding speeches, and the guitarist played at amazing speed with the guitar held behind his head. All in all, a night to remember for all!”
