This Ring Box Makes an Absolutely Beautiful Keepsake

It’s time for today’s handmade wedding find: a ring box keepsake! Be sure you’re subscribed so you never miss a post.

You know we love a classic ring pillow, but we’re always on the hunt for the new and unique twists that handmade weddings have to offer. One of our favorite ring pillow alternatives is a ring box. A ring box is typically made of wood and is definitely reusable. Couples use a ring box after the big day to hold treasures, like jewelry, valuables, or even their most treasured keepsakes (like a favorite necklace, ring, or, my favorite, baby’s nursery bracelet).

Today we’re sharing a new ring box that we know you’ll love from White Tulip Boutique. This wood box features an engraved Celtic cross on the top and moss placed inside as a “pillow” for your rings. The moss can be removed afterward, giving way to your treasures in your new keepsake box. This ring box is ideal for Irish weddings or church weddings. Take a look!

“Do I Really Need a Ring Pillow?” – Ask Emmaline

Hello, brides! If you’re gearing up for your wedding ceremony and wondering what all the fuss is over the ring pillow, we’re here to help! Today we’re sharing nine things to know about the ring pillow, which includes answers to your most-asked questions to our ‘Ask Emmaline‘ inbox such as, “Do I really need a ring pillow?” Plus, we’re showcasing some handmade loveliness from Laura Stark, one of the most amazing ring pillow designers to date, for inspiration. Read on to find out more about the ring pillow, get inspired, and let us know which style you love best. (Mine? A tie between the mustard ring pillow and the something blue, shown below. Love ’em both.) Enjoy!

Do I Really Need a Ring Pillow? And Other Concerns

1. What is a ring pillow? Do I need a ring pillow for my wedding?

A ring pillow is a small square pillow onto which the wedding rings are placed and secured with a ribbon. While not required, a ring pillow makes a beautiful keepsake after the wedding. If you are worried about cost, consider a DIY ring pillow or look for ring pillows that fit in best with your budget. Prefer no ring bearer? You can skip the tradition altogether and opt instead for the best man to hold the rings in his pocket. It’s all up to you!

2. What is the approximate age of a ring bearer?

The ring bearer’s age varies at each wedding, but typically the age of the ring bearer is between age 4 and 9.

3. What size should the ring pillow be?

When shopping for a ring pillow, consider your ring bearer’s age and size. If the ring pillow is too big, it can be bulky and hard to carry. Too small, and it will seem awkward for him to hold.

4. What is a ring pillow handle? Do I need one?

A ring pillow handle is a piece of ribbon or fabric sewn to the reverse side of the pillow for the ring bearer to hold onto. This makes it easy for his little hands to carry the pillow down the aisle. A handle can be sewn in to an existing ring pillow using needle and thread and can be crafted with a piece of wide ribbon or fabric. Many ring pillows today are crafted with a ring pillow handle already attached.

5. Does the ring pillow have to match the style and theme of my wedding?

Whenever we get a question about whether something has to be done in a wedding, the answer is always no. It’s your wedding – everything should be exactly the way you want it to be. So, technically, no, your ring pillow doesn’t HAVE to match the style and theme of your wedding. A thematic ring pillow may add a more cohesive look to your overall ceremony, but the most important thing is that the ring pillow (or alternative) represents you. That’s all that really matters!

7. Do the actual wedding rings get tied to the ring pillow?

Typically decoy rings are used on a ring pillow in the event the rings fall off the pillow. This is especially important if you’re planning a beach wedding or wedding in the woods, since finding the rings may take a small miracle in the tiny amount of time allotted. I’ve seen real rings used, too, and I’ve also seen no rings placed on the pillow at all. The pillow is more of a symbolic gesture; the actual wedding rings are usually given to the best man to hold.

8. I want to incorporate an heirloom into my ring pillow. Any ideas how to do this?

If you’re ordering a custom ring pillow, ask the designer if he or she can incorporate a piece of fabric from your grandmother’s dress, a vintage handkerchief, or lace trim from your mother’s veil. These heirlooms are just a few examples of tying in ‘something old’ with ‘something new’ to create a very unique keepsake item.

9. I love ring pillows, but I’m also interested in some unique alternatives. Have any ideas?

There are plenty of ideas for ring pillow alternatives! Some examples include a ring box, ring nest, a book with the rings tied around it, a ring bowl, a seashell (with rings attached by a ribbon), or, if you’re having the best man hold the rings, he can walk with another child and carry a banner, garland, or a sign that reads, “Here Comes the Bride”. You can find all of these (+ more!) here.

To find out more about the ring pillow examples featured – and to see more – visit Laura Stark. Aside from the ring pillow, Laura also sells beautiful jewelry, sashes, and more. Laura Stark is a Featured Artisan in The Marketplace.

Happy Planning!
