Hello, loves! If you’re a fan of DIY wedding ideas, you are going to LOVE this post! Meet Margaux and Chad – now newlyweds! – a charming couple who combined their love for handmade, vintage, and DIY details to create one truly memorable day. The bride, Margaux (of the oh-so-chic Harmony Creative Studio), styled and created nearly everything you see here from start to finish. Today, you get a front-row seat at Margaux and Chad’s wedding where you’ll see eight hand-picked DIY wedding ideas (like stationery, vintage bottle centerpieces, a candy buffet, escort cards, and more), you’ll find out how Margaux tackled these DIY ideas, and you’ll get a glimpse into their incredible wedding venue. Ready to get started? Read on to begin! (Also, a special thank you to Meghan Christine Photography for all of the images you see below, except where noted. Beautiful work!)
P.S. Check out this amazing backdrop! It’s an succulent-lover’s dream come true!
When I saw this, I pretty much couldn’t believe my eyes, so I did more research. The venue – called Smog Shoppe – is chock-full of walls like these!
And, here’s a group photo of the wedding party. I love those mis-matched (but still color-coordinated) bridesmaid dresses.
Now, onto the handmade wedding ideas!
DIY Wedding Ideas
DIY Wedding Ideas: #1 – The Stationery
First, let’s take a moment to admire the wedding invitations Margaux and Chad sent to guests. These were recently featured on Invitation Crush and we think they’re absolutely lovely. The invitation concept was by Margaux on behalf of Harmony Creative Studio, created by Shayna of Steel Petal Press, and the postcard save the dates were by Ginger of Serendipity Beyond Design. Talk about one amazing artisan trio!
Margaux designed these kraft paper ceremony programs herself. I love the lace ribbon and the kraft paper. (You can buy your own customized programs in her shop!)
This kraft menu wrap is another brilliant idea!
DIY Wedding Ideas: #2 – The Bouquet
Margaux captured all elements of ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue’ in her heirloom brooch bouquet which she handmade herself. It took her nearly 4 months to create and hand-wire the brooch bouquet. She included a light blue pin from her maternal grandmother in the bulk of the bouquet making this a true heirloom.
Margaux not only carried her ultra-gorgeous brooch bouquet; she also incorporated two lovely sentiments. The first sentiment was ‘MH’ initial hat pins which belonged to her paternal grandmother, who coincidentally shared the same initials as Margaux. She attached the hat pins to her bouquet handle.
She also borrowed a locket which opened to reveal a photo of her grandfather; she wrapped the locket around the bouquet.
DIY Wedding Ideas: #3 – The Wine Box Ceremony
The wine ceremony was an important part of their day. Margaux tells us, “The highlight of our ceremony was a ‘Wine Box Sealing’. We placed a bottle of Champagne and letters to each other in a wine box and nailed it shut, to be opened on our first anniversary. We will then place another bottle and letters in, open it in on the next anniversary and have a mini tradition each year. Leave it to my handy husband – when we couldn’t find the exact box we were looking for, he made and stained this one himself.”
DIY Wedding Ideas: #4 – The Escort Cards
The escort cards were made of kraft tags and displayed on jute twine using clothespins. Margaux adds, “On each table were bowls with over 1000 1″ buttons we made with 10 different custom designs, and one special button for each guest with nicknames, inside jokes or other fun info. The DJ announced for our guests to search their tables and try to find the buttons made just for them, and they ended up being great ice breakers.”
DIY Wedding Ideas: #5 – The Sweetheart Table
Margaux and Chad chose a sweetheart table rather than a head table for their reception. I love the lace table runners and the ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ kraft signs on the chairs.
DIY Wedding Ideas: #6 – The Candy Buffet
Margaux tells us, “The backdrop for the candy buffet was quite a DIY project, and large scale projects like this are something Harmony Creative Studio specializes in due to my extensive Retail Store & Fixture Design background. I loved making this piece out of individual strips of lace used elsewhere in the wedding, and the geometric layout was a way to keep it modern and fresh.”
Favorite candies were housed inside vintage-inspired apothecary jars, which featured labels made of kraft paper and ribbon.
Guests filled their custom-made kraft paper candy bags as their take-home wedding favor.
Margaux tells us, ” My husband is originally from Iowa, but we met a year after he moved to Los Angeles. LA is our home and we wanted to show it off, as our celebration quickly became a destination wedding for the more than 60 out of town guests. We put together Welcome Bags that were based on our home city of Santa Monica, where our guests were staying. We included our favorite local snacks, custom 1″ buttons and an 8-page booklet that included all the wedding info and highlighted our favorite spots to eat, shop and sightsee.”
Here are a few more shots we wanted to share from the wedding. Here’s the beautiful bride, Margaux…
… and holy smokes, check out these heels! (They’re appropriately named ‘Hottness’ by Steve Madden.)
… Mariella! Congratulations! Please look in your inbox for details on how to claim your prize.

Have you set your wedding date? Once you make it official, it’s time to share the exciting news with your loved ones in the form of a save the date. If you’re an avid wedding magazine subscriber or wedding blog enthusiast, you have most likely viewed some clever (read: complicated) save the date ideas. While lovely, we understand 100+ save the date gifts for guests may not be the most realistic idea in the real wedding planning world. So, today, we’re here to show you how to simplify your save the date – without stripping it of handmade personal style… and, it’s easier than you may think!
To simplify your save the dates, we recommend one of our favorite go-to ideas: the handmade save the date postcard. Don’t worry, you don’t have to figure out how to create a postcard on your computer; instead, hire a professional artisan to help! A postcard save the date can tie in your engagement photograph and incorporate your pertinent wedding day details in a short, sweet, and sentimental way. To bring a little handmade inspiration your way, we’ve gathered up a few of our favorites from a lovely shop known as Nostalgic Imprints which offers some of the sweetest vintage save the date postcards we’ve ever seen. Just submit a photograph + your wedding date to the folks at Nostalgic Imprints and they will create a one-of-a-kind vintage-inspired save the date postcard suitable for framing!
A handmade save the date postcard requires only four steps: just order, address, stamp, and send. What could be easier? We love the personal touch of hand-written addresses, but to save even more time you could type the addresses in a word processor, print onto clear labels, affix, stamp, and send. Nice + easy, with no writer’s cramp.
Check out a few of our hand-picked favorite save the date postcard ideas from Nostalgic Imprints below:
Love getting mail? (Who doesn’t?) Then you’ll love this clever guestbook alternative! Introducing the wedding postcard guestbook, an alternative to a traditional bounded book that may be perfect for your wedding. Read on to find out how this brilliant idea works and where you can get a set of yours!<
The Wedding Postcard Guest Book
How It Works
These postcards, by Sweet Bella, are a fun way for guests to send their best wishes straight to your home. Guests are given a postcard (stamped) on which to write his or her wishes; then, the postcards are sent in the mail. When you return from your honeymoon, you’ll be greeted at your new love nest with postcards filled with warm wishes from friends & family! What a charming idea!
From Laura of Sweet Bella: “We love brainstorming new designs and seeing them come to life once printed on our linen stock. Our line has now extended to over 500 designs and we are excited to continue our collection in 2012!”
