Your friend is right — you should never use scented candles at wedding receptions. And I know it’s tempting, since those fall and winter candles are especially delicious smelling (I think I burn this one from September through November every year, pretty much every day!) Here’s why using scented candles at wedding receptions is a classically bad idea.

Scented Candles at Wedding Receptions?

Using scented candles at wedding receptions can cause a few different problems. First, your venue might not allow for candles at all; some venues prohibit open flame, due to the risk of fire. Secondly, scented candles can interfere with the taste of your guests food. And since you’ve carefully picked out the menu, it would be a shame for a scent to cause food to be unappetizing. And, third, many people are sensitive to scents; it can even cause headaches, stomachaches, or sneezing.

So, as lovely as the scent may be to you, save it for use at home. You should always use non-scented candles at your wedding. We would go one step further to recommend battery-operated candles instead. This way, you never have to worry about a fire hazard. And hey, one less thing to worry about on your wedding day? That’s always a plus in my book.

P.S. Just wanted to clarify that scented candles (small tealights or votives) used as wedding favors are fine, as long as they’re packaged. We’re referring to candles that are burned throughout the reception. In fact, here are some adorable candle favors that are totally EB approved.
