It looks like they drilled a hole at the top, then pulled the through and knotted it at the top.  Would that work?

					<description><![CDATA[I&#039;m planning on making one of these for my middle daughter&#039;s wedding this coming October. I bought a small white shepherds hook and a white cowbell and I plan on sticking the hook into a white painted coffee can filled with plaster to hold up the hook. And decorate a bit with flowers. 
But I have a question:
I know I can just hang the bell but I noticed a string hanging below the Pinterest bell. 
Where do I tie the extra string for folks to pull the bell to ring?
