I was recently chatting with a bride-to-be who was worried after forgetting to put postage stamps on her RSVP cards.
But here’s the kicker: she already sealed them up with her wedding invitations. To go back and add the stamps, she would need to rip them open, purchase new envelopes, and re-address them all. What should she do?
In this blog post, we’ll discuss the rule on putting postage on RSVP cards. Is it required? Here’s the answer, along with some solutions on what to do in this scenario.
Adding Postage to Your RSVP Cards is a Nice Gesture – But Not Required
When you send RSVP cards with your invitations, they include a small envelope for guests to mail it back, already addressed to you. This makes it convenient for guests to fill out the card, place it in the mail, and send it back to you quickly. When you include a postage stamp, that encourages guests to mail it even sooner, since they don’t have to search around for a stamp at home or go buy a book of stamps at the post office. It is proper etiquette to add postage to the envelopes to make it convenient for guests. However, what happens if you FORGET to add them? What should you do after the fact?
Here are two options:
1. Open the Envelopes Gently If you’re able to open the envelopes gently, I recommend doing so. Put the postage stamps on the RSVP envelopes, then seal them back up with a sticker seal, like one of these, to ensure the envelope does not appear tampered with (and it seals securely).
or
2. Send Them Anyway If you’re unable to open them up without messing the envelopes up completely, I highly encourage you to send the invitations as-is. Sure, it’s a nice gesture to add postage to the return envelopes, but is it really worth trashing perfectly good envelopes that are all addressed with POSTAGE already added to them? Not in the least. I say send them anyway – and most guests won’t even notice.
I hope it helps. Try not to stress too much. These things happen. :)
