Emma here and let me tell you, I’m a serious coffee drinker. As in, need coffee every morning. In fact, I just told Andrew I want to put a huge canvas up in the kitchen that says “But first, coffee”. It’s pretty much the start of my every days. Does that sound like you, too? Or maybe tea?
Even though I haven’t always been an avid coffee connoisseur, the last few years of it has really done a number on my pearly whites. They stopped being so pearly. And white. And with all of those teeth whitening gels and creams and trays and mouthwashes out there, it can be pretty confusing to know what actually works.
I’ve tried a certain brand’s teeth whitening strips in the past. I won’t name names, but it involved peeling a whitening strip and applying to one’s teeth. Every day, for like, a week. And that’s if you go with the more expensive box. I’ve tried these in the past, but you know what? Every day I DREADED applying the stupid strip. It made me gag. It tasted awful. It made my teeth HURT SO BADLY. Who knew my teeth were so sensitive?
So when I came across this whitening at home process and had the opportunity to give Smile Brilliant a try, I gave it a go. Instead of peel-off stick on strips, you get these custom trays made from a mold of your own teeth! Here’s how it works.
Here’s one customer testimonial:
How It Works
1. Tray kit arrives.
You squeal. Rip open the packaging. Follow the directions. Make a mold from your teeth with the provided impression kit. Place molds in pre-stamped and addressed envelope. Put into any mailbox.
2. Wait for impressions to arrive.
They won’t take long, only a few days. Then, marvel at your beautifully created plastic trays made from your lovely smile. Try it on.
3. Apply desensitizing gel.
Follow directions provided; this stuff will make your teeth less sensitive. I can’t say it is going to work for sure for you, but I will say that it definitely helped with my teeth sensitivity. Andrew gave the kit a go, too. I asked him to join me on this teeth whitening challenge. He accepted. We both agreed our teeth were a little sensitive, but not painfully so (as I have experienced with other brands in the past).
4. Apply whitening gel.
It’s go time: rinse off and brush off the desensitizing gel. Apply the whitening gel to your trays. Insert into mouth. Watch an hour-long episode of Gilmore Girls on Netflix. We chose Season 4, Episode 22 where things start to get a little more complicated with Rory and Dean. Realize you got so into the episode that you accidentally went past your original agreed upon one-hour allotted whitening time; but, as you know from the package, it’s totally flexible, ranging from 20 minutes to 3 full hours depending on your teeth sensitivity. We chose one hour.
5. Rinse. Smile.
Brush. Smile. Look in the mirror and think, does this look whiter? Yes. Yes it does. Slicker, too, but that could just be from our amazing toothpaste that we bought.
Well? Did It Work?
For us, this kit did work to whiten our teeth! But we can’t guarantee or claim results will work for you or everyone. I always give my honest opinion; if this product was not as good as they claim it to be I would be the first to tell you. This was my first application, and I have two others still ready to go. I plan to do them a week apart to give my gums time to breathe and to really get an idea of the whitening progress. So far… so good!
Before and After Photos
Here you’ll find our before and after photos. This is from just one hour-long application. The more applications you do, the whiter your teeth can become. Ours came with three.

Anyway, we’re going to do a follow-up on this in a week or two to give you the results of two applications. If I was you, I’d be interested in how many applications it takes to get to level WOW whitening. That’s what I’m calling it. So far, though, I’m pretty impressed! With past whitening products, it would hurt so much I couldn’t continue the full amount of time; thanks to this one and the desensitizing gel, I was able to do a full application without pain.
