Did you know that RSVP cards are one of the most important pieces of wedding mail to send? RSVP cards – which are used to ask guests if they will or will not attend your wedding – are important to have because they’ll provide an accurate head count ahead of your celebration. But there are a few types of RSVP card templates you can use, and it can be tricky to know which one is best for your event. In this blog post, we’ll tell you the difference between each kind of RSVP card, why it is used, and you’ll be able to decide which template is best for your wedding.
We’ll introduce you to:
• Traditional RSVP Cards
• Online RSVP Cards
• Hybrid RSVP Cards (A Mix of Both!)
Let’s get started!
I like to use Minted for RSVP cards, as they have a really nice design collection and the paper is of the highest quality. I also utilize them for my clients with wedding invitations for the same reasons. However, if you’ve already purchased invitations elsewhere, you’ll be happy to know their RSVP cards fit right in to nearly any style seamlessly. You can browse examples here.
First, let’s kick it old school with the most classic and formal option: the traditional rsvp card.
Traditional RSVP Cards
Here is an example of a traditional RSVP card.
The format and design of traditional RSVP cards look similar to the above. The wording typically includes “M_________” with a line (here’s how to fill that part out). It also may include entree selections, where guests initial next to their preference, but if your wedding has a buffet you do not need this portion.
This type of RSVP card is proper etiquette for formal events where a sit-down plated style dinner is served.

Prefer an instant response? Let’s discuss the online wedding rsvp card.
Online RSVP Cards
Here’s an example of an online rsvp.
Next, you have an online option. With the rise of technology, we’ve seen a huge increase in the inclusion of the internet when it comes to RSPVing for a wedding. These RSVP cards are convenient, utilize technology, and are cost-effective. This type of RSVP card can be linked to your wedding website, where guests can submit “yes” or “no” to their response. Many couples are doing this with a link to their website or a QR code, a type of image that can be scanned on a smartphone for convenience. (Here’s a helpful tutorial on how to make QR code rsvp cards.)
Online RSVPs are a huge benefit for tech-savvy guests, as well as budget-friendly events, since you do not need to mail back the card. This saves the couple postage and an extra return envelope per invitation you mail, which can really add up.
However, some less tech-savvy guests may not be familiar with how it works, or some guests may not have access to the internet, so keep this in mind.

Lastly, let’s talk about a combination of both: the hybrid RSVP card.
Hybrid RSVP Cards
Not sure which way to go? Choose a combination of both, aka the hybrid RSVP card. This is a mix of traditional and online RSVP cards, simply offering one option to some guests and an alternate option to others. This provides your guests with a combination that is both easy to use and flexible, is best suited for events with diverse guest demographics, and is a perfect option for modern weddings and events.
For instance, you could edit an RSVP card template for guests who are expecting this option – and may be a little less tech-savvy.
Then, go ahead and send these digital rsvp cards to guests who are familiar with the online RSVP option.
By having both options available to guests, they can decide which works best for them. Either mail back the card at the due date provided, or submit the response digitally through the wedding website. It’s nice and convenient.

As you’ve learned here, RSVP cards aren’t really that different when you think about it. Each type of card provides a way for guests to respond and accept the invitation – or politely decline. The type of RSVP card you should choose is the one that best suits your guest demographics and the style of your event. I hope this helps you to make the best decision to the success of your event! And I hope that all guests respond in a timely manner. :) If not, here are some tips on what to do when wedding guests don’t respond on time.
