Where does your wedding ring go? Where does the engagement ring and wedding ring go? We’ll tell you! Read on + subscribe for the latest to your inbox.
If you’re wondering where your wedding ring goes, and how it is properly worn, we’ll help you out. This question came in to us from Sara who is stumped about which ring goes on first: the engagement ring or the wedding band.
She writes,
“Hi Emmaline, I have my engagement ring on my left hand ring finger and I know the wedding ring will be worn with it. But on the wedding day, where does the engagement ring and wedding ring go? Which goes first? Thank you.”
Now that’s a great question and it’s funny because I wondered the same thing when I got married. I switched it up many times not knowing for sure which was correct, but then I did some digging and now I know so I’ll pass on the knowledge to you. :)
Where does the engagement ring and wedding ring go?
The engagement ring goes ABOVE your wedding ring on the left hand, the fourth finger.
(In some countries and cultures, the ring is worn on the right hand; consult the chart here for details.)
On your wedding day, you’ll wear your engagement ring on your right hand and your partner will slide the wedding ring onto your left hand ring finger. Later, you will transfer the engagement ring to go on top of the wedding band on your left hand.
Engagement Ring Finger vs Wedding
The engagement ring finger vs wedding ring finger is really no contest: it’s the same finger! The only difference is the engagement ring is placed above the wedding ring on your hand.
Engagement Ring Finger for Male and Female
It’s the same. As a rule of thumb, the engagement ring finger for male and female is the left hand, the fourth finger, traditionally known as the ring finger (the fourth finger from the left side of your hand – thumb).
Which Ring Goes First?
When you wear your rings, the engagement ring should be worn above your wedding ring. Why? It is said to be tradition because the wedding ring is the closest to a vein running in that hand that is said to go directly to the heart, so you’re wearing your wedding ring as close to your heart as possible. Isn’t that interesting?
Now you know! :)
If you’re wondering where to put or store your ring when it is not being worn, that’s an entirely different question. Putting yours in a ring box or safe spot to keep it from getting lost is an important thing to consider. We recommend engagement ring dishes, ring boxes, or even a ring tray like this to set it down for a moment when cleaning, doing dishes, working out at the gym, swimming, showering, or sleeping.
Any time you do not wish to wear your ring to keep it from getting lost or ruined, we recommend setting it somewhere you always have in place so you know exactly where it is. You wouldn’t want to lose it (especially if you do not have insurance).
Thanks so much for writing!
