Bride-to-be, Lindsey, writes to us with this question on how to carry the vows down the aisle. She writes,
“Hi Emmaline! I’m working on writing my wedding vows and it occurred to me. Who holds the vows during the ceremony? Me? My Maid of Honor? The Best Man? I don’t have pockets on my wedding gown and I’m already holding my bouquet, so I’m not sure how to carry my vow book. Thanks for your input!”
Great question, Lindsey!
Don’t worry: you don’t have to carry your vows down the aisle. You have enough to do with walking down the aisle with your father or special role model, holding a bouquet, and keeping your eyes on your partner waiting for you at the other side.
Your Maid of Honor is handling a lot of roles: holding her bouquet, and will be holding yours in the other hand (while making sure your gown is properly fluffed and your veil isn’t flying all over the place). The Best Man has his focus on the ring, so he doesn’t need another item to be responsible for.
That’s why the person who holds the vows at the wedding ceremony is… your officiant! Hand your piece of paper or vow books to them BEFORE the ceremony begins and they’ll give them to you when it’s time to read the vows aloud.
After your vows are read, you can hand the books back to the officiant to hold on to until the ceremony is over.
Hope it helps! Thanks to Lindsey for writing.
