It’s time to plan your wedding getaway car! Take notes because you’ll want to remember these must-haves!
You’re probably not thinking about the drive home from your wedding yet… but it’s definitely one thing many couples overlook on their checklist.
Given the opportunity for wedding photos as you make your grand exit / send-off (you know… with bubbles, sparklers, glow sticks, etc.), afterward, it makes sense to elegantly get into a vehicle, smile, wave, and drive away with your new spouse.
Since this is such a fun grand exit idea and the perfect opportunity for final photographs of the day, we wanted to share the top five things every good getaway car needs to have (and cue the song by T Swift because it’s stuck in my head now, but it’s a different sort of getaway car, ha!)
So, let’s get to it!
Wedding Getaway Car: 5 Must-Haves
First, and I know this is obvious, but let’s talk about it for a minute: you need a wedding getaway car.
You can’t have a dream “grand exit” without a vehicle to be a part of it… so, either designate one of your vehicles as transportation or hire someone to drive you. I recommend the latter if it fits into your budget; it’s so much fun to enjoy the festivities and dance your you-know-whats off and not worry about driving.
For our wedding, we hired a black town car. It was a comfortable drive and we were able to just enjoy the short trip from the reception hall back to our place in style. You can find a town car for rent near you with a quick search like this on Google. (Make sure you read reviews first!)
Of course, you can always Uber home, so if you don’t care what kind of car you’ll get or who will pick you up or when, that’s always an option. I’ve had pretty good luck with Uber as a wedding guest, but never tried it as the bride, but I know my dress wouldn’t have fit in most standard cars. :) (It’s not just you or me, even Princess Eugenie had trouble with her gown! It happens to everyone!)
1. Decorations for your wedding car.
Maybe your Maid of Honor is planning to deck out the car with classic tin cans or perhaps the Best Man is going to use window markers to decorate the windows. But we have a better idea: use a window decal you can remove when you’re done! No fuss, no muss, no mess. And it’s personalized, so really, what is better than that?
You can find this design and MANY others at Match Set Love or browse her adorable Etsy shop!
2. A tote bag to carry those last-minute things.
Here’s something you probably haven’t thought about: a giant tote bag. You’ll need to carry a bunch of things home with you, just from getting ready in the bridal suite with all of this stuff, those last-minute cards guests hand you as you’re exiting that they forgot to put in the card box, and extra favors left on the table.
Now, you could get a Bride bag, but would it be durable enough? Would it hold enough stuff? The ones I found aren’t nearly that big, and are you really going to use it again? Likely not that many times.
So, that’s where this HUGE, durable bag comes in. It has a zipper top, so nothing will fall out of the bag. It’s a great price and perfect for re-using many times after the big day. Get it here.
Inside the bag, store your wedding emergency kit, along with a bottle of water. You may need an aspirin or some hydration on the way home, as well as breath mints. ;) You’ll want that first kiss on the ride home as newlyweds to be minty fresh!
3. A comfortable pair of flats.
Every wedding getaway car needs to have a comfortable change of shoes for the bride. You’ll walk away from your grand exit in gorgeous heels, but you’ll secretly be excited to change into your specialty flats, just for the occasion.
So, go ahead and toss your heels into that tote bag we mentioned and can change into these.
I have a pair of these Cinderollies and I’m not just saying this… they’re ridiculously comfortable! And they roll up, hence their name, and fold into a cute little travel pouch.
I wear them every time I attend a wedding, especially on the dance floor and on the drive home! You can see other examples here.
4. A charged camera or disposable camera
I know, by this point on your wedding day, you’ve taken more than enough photos. But the drive home from your wedding with your new spouse is a really wonderful time.
Be sure to capture the fun with a few snaps on your camera / phone, or take pics with one of these cameras, likely the one you also used for your fun polaroid photo booth.
5. A fun game to play!
Have a long drive? Toss in this fun Just Married Mad Libs pack to do with your new spouse. You’ll be laughing all the way home!
And there you have it: what you need in your wedding getaway car! What would YOU add to the list?
I hope it helps with your wedding getaway car trip! It’s a lot of fun, just the two of you, chatting about how much fun the wedding was. It’s a great time to remember, so make it extra special with these helpful tips. :)
Happy Planning!
