What size save the date should you order, and why?
Today we’re tackling this question thanks to bride-to-be, Sara, who wants to know exactly that: what is the standard size of a save the date card?
She writes,
“Hello Emmaline, I’m looking at save the dates and I’m wondering what size I should get. Is there a standard size for save the dates, and if so, what do you recommend? Thanks!”
Great question! The most common save the date size is 5″ x 7″ for a standard card. This is a perfect size because it’s not too big, and not too small; most of all, it has just the right amount of room to allow personalized touches (such as your motif, colors, and a photo) along with the proper wording to accompany it.
However, that does not mean you MUST choose a standard size save the date.
Let’s discuss a few of the alternate options, along with the pros of each. There are really no cons to any of them; the size you select is based on your own personal preference.
What Size Save the Date?
• Standard Size
The standard size as we mentioned above is 5″ x 7″.
• Petite Size Save the Date
Known as the “petite” size cards at Minted here, this particular card can be made in a flat or fold-over style. This measures 4.25″ x 6″, similar to the postage style below. In addition, it has enough room to convey the message without being overly wordy.
• Postcard Size
A standard postcard is 4.25″ x 6″. Postcard-sized save the dates make a great option because there is no need for an envelope to accompany it. Plus, the postage for one postcard stamp is cheaper than a standard postage stamp for larger cards.
At the time of publication, a postcard stamp vs a regular stamp is significantly cheaper: it is 40 cents for a postcard stamp, while a standard postage stamp costs 58 cents, according to the latest postage rate increase.
• Magnet
A typical magnet size save the date card measures 4.25″ x 6″, the very same size as the petite and postcard shown above. However, when mailing magnet save the dates, you’ll need envelopes to accompany them and you must use regular postage stamps (not postcard stamps).
And there you have it: three different sizes from which to choose for your save the date cards.
