If you’re making a wedding website soon (do it, it’s free and oh-so-convenient), I know you’ll run into this question: what are you supposed to name the wedding website? What should your URL be?
Bride-to-be, Vanessa, writes us with a question about her wedding url:
“Hi Emmaline, I’m creating my wedding website but it’s asking me what I want my website name to be. What does that mean, the url? I’m not sure what to put for it. Does my name or my partner’s name (Mike) go first? Do we use a hashtag? Thank you for your help!”
Hi Vanessa, great question. A wedding website name or wedding url is the address guests will type into their browser to visit your site. Yours may be something like, “VanessaAndMikeGetHitched.com”. It’s basically your wedding website link.
The name itself with a custom domain is usually an upgrade feature, but it doesn’t typically cost more than around $10 or $15. It’s so much easier than typing it out in full, aka:
weddingwebsitemaker.com/couples/VanessaAndMikeGetHitched2024/
:)
The upgrade fee is 100% worth it. Some guests will scan your QR code, but others won’t and they’ll just avoid typing all of that into a browser.
Since you want guests to, ya know, actually visit your website, get yourself a custom url name that is memorable and unique.
My best advice? Keep it as short and sweet as possible – but make it distinctive. Make it something guests will remember, or at least be able to type in and then bookmark into their smartphone.
Here are some tips.
Create a Unique Website Name
Think about how many Vanessas and Mikes have probably already made a website prior to yours, so you may need to add in some moniker to make yours unique.
For instance, let’s say you choose “VanessaAndMikeWed.com” or something similar. Here are some creative ways to give yours a bit of a twist:
► LOCATION: Use your wedding location, like VanessaandMikeGetMauied or VandMHawaii
► YEAR: Incorporate the wedding year if you need to differentiate yours, like VanessaandMike2024
► MONOGRAM: Go for the monogram if you’d like to keep it short, aka “VandMWedding”
► AVOID LONG-LENGTH: Don’t make it too long, i.e. VanessaLucasandMikeSorensonGetMarriedIn2024. It’s just too much. :)
PRO TIP: Some guests will use a QR code to scan it, but others won’t know how or won’t bother scanning the QR code and will enter it into their web browser. Make sure it is easy to type, and most of all, ensure there are no errors in the website address BEFORE you print it onto your wedding invitation cards.
The worst mistake you could make with naming the URL is getting it wrong on the invitation and… 404 errors are no fun for anyone.
Hope it helps and thanks for writing!
