Wedding invitation addressing is one of those tasks that many couples run away scared of, simply because they are worried they’ll make a mistake and do it wrong.
But it’s really easy to address wedding invitations to a family, an individual, or a couple with a few easy, straightforward rules. We’ll walk you through it so you’ll be confident when you get to addressing your wedding invites.
This question came in from Michele who wanted to know exactly what she was supposed to write when addressing wedding invitations to a family. She wants to make sure they know they are ALL invited, so how is it supposed to be written?
She writes,
“Dear Emmaline, I’m working on addressing wedding invitations right now and I’m stumped. How do I address wedding invitations to a family? We’re inviting kids to our wedding so I want to make sure the kids are included, but I’m not sure how to word it. Any tips?”
Terrific question, Michele! Great point: when you’re addressing invitations, one huge clue you’re giving away on the envelope itself is whether or not the entire family is invited — including kids — or if this is an adults only event.
As you indicated, you’re inviting an entire family. Another question that came to mind with yours is, does every wedding guest get an invitation?
Do you have to send a wedding invitation to each guest? No, not necessarily.
As a rule of thumb, any guest under the age of 18 should be included in one main family invitation.
On the other hand, any guest age 18 and over should receive his or her own invitation in the mail.
Here’s how to address wedding invites to a family.
Addressing Invitations to the Whole Family
There are two different ways to address invitations in this manner, depending on if you’re using two envelopes (an inner and outer) for a more formal wedding OR just an outer envelope for more casual weddings. Here are both options and how to address invitations to a family.
Option 1: Outer Envelope and Inner Envelope
OUTER ENVELOPE
Mr. and Mrs. James Halpert
11988 Peach Lane
Scranton, Pennsylvania 18508
INNER ENVELOPE
The inner envelope should be worded like this to include family members individually named:
Mr. and Mrs. James Halpert
Ceceila Halpert
Phillip Halpert
OR, if you wish to have a less formal option, address the inside envelope like this:
Jim and Pam Halpert
Ceceila and Phillip
Option 2: Outer Envelope Only
This is easy! To address an invitation and ensure the whole family is invited, write the following:
The Halpert Family
11988 Peach Lane
Scranton, Pennsylvania 18508
By doing so, it lets the entire family know they’re invited, including the children.
