Does the best man give a gift to the groom? That’s the question we’re answering today! EB reader, Mark, wrote us this question about his brother who is getting married this May. We’ll answer Mark’s question and tell you everything you need to know about the best man gift to the groom including how much it costs, how much you should spend on the gift, and when to give the gift to the groom. And we’ll share some top gift picks from leather gift expert Mr. Lentz. But first, on to the question…
Mark is the Best Man in his brother’s wedding in May and has one question. He writes,
“Hi Emmaline, I’m the Best Man for my brother’s wedding in May. I have been a groomsman before but never the best man. Aside from the things I’m supposed to do, I was wondering… does the best man give a gift to the groom? And if so, do you have any gift suggestions? Thanks for your help.”
Hi, Mark! Thanks for writing. Whether the best man needs to give a gift to the groom is a hotly debated topic for some. We’ve heard the point of view from both sides — the best man may already be going above and beyond on his duties, so why should he also give a gift? On the other hand, this is his brother or best friend’s wedding, and if he wants to give a gift, what’s wrong with it? Here’s a pretty good rule of thumb to follow: do you want to give him a gift? If the answer is yes, then give him a gift. If you don’t want to give him a gift, or cannot (i.e. you’re already spent on the other associated costs like the bachelor party and the tux rental), don’t sweat it — the groom will understand. I highly doubt the groom is expecting a gift. On the other hand, if you CAN give a gift, we say go for it! A thoughtful, personalized gift is always welcome (and the groom is sure to appreciate it).
Now, keep in mind the gift does not have to be extravagant or expensive. We’ll help you through the gift-giving with a few simple pointers.
Best Man Gift to Groom: 2 Tips
1. Keep it simple.
The gift for the groom from the best man should be simple: something you know he will like, but nothing overly flashy or ridiculously expensive that goes over the top. The gift is a small token of your congratulations on his wedding day, so something around the $75-$150 mark is a solid gift range. Under this amount is okay, of course — but anything more tends may be too extravagant for this gift. Don’t overthink it. Just go with something personal, something tasteful, and a gift that is totally his style.
2. Give the gift the morning of the wedding.
The Best Man is pretty much with the groom before the wedding and throughout most of the day. The best time to give the gift is when you have a minute together either just the two of you (before getting ready) or with the other groomsmen. (In case you’re wondering whether the groomsmen have to give a gift to the groom: no, they do not. A wedding gift for the couple, though — yes.)
Gift from Best Man to Groom
To help in your search for the perfect gift, we’ve selected a few of our favorite leather gifts from Mr. Lentz. Why leather, you ask? That’s easy: leather gets better with age and is built to last — much like the soon-to-wed couple’s marriage, or your long-standing family ties or friendship. Leather is a great gift for the groom from the best man.
Is he going somewhere for the honeymoon? A passport holder is an awesome gift idea.
