How to Dress for a Fall Wedding Dress Code
Before you pick a dress, check the invitation or wedding website for the dress code. That will tell you how formal your outfit should be.
Black Tie
Choose a floor-length gown or another very formal dress in an elegant fabric such as satin, velvet, or crepe. Rich jewel tones, black, navy, and deep autumn shades work beautifully for an evening black-tie wedding.

Formal Wedding
A long maxi dress is a classic choice for a formal wedding, although a polished midi can also work depending on the venue and time of day. Look for elevated fabrics, refined silhouettes, and accessories that make the outfit feel finished.
Cocktail Wedding
This is where a gorgeous midi or knee-length dress really shines. Satin, lace, velvet, crepe, and dressier florals can all work beautifully for a fall cocktail wedding.
If you’re going to a cocktail wedding, I love a black and red floral satin midi like this one. The dark floral print feels perfect for fall, while the satin gives it that polished finish you want for a dressier wedding.

Casual or Outdoor Wedding
You can keep things a little more relaxed with a midi, maxi, wrap dress, or polished knee-length style. Just make sure the dress still feels appropriate for a wedding rather than an everyday outing.
What Colors Should You Wear to a Fall Wedding?
Fall is a great time to wear deeper, richer shades, but you don’t have to limit yourself to traditional “fall colors.” Think about the time of day, venue, dress code, and your own personal style.
Some of my favorite fall wedding guest dress colors include:
- Burgundy and wine
- Rust and terracotta
- Emerald and dark green
- Navy blue
- Plum and purple
- Chocolate brown
- Dusty blue
- Mauve
- Sage green
- Black
And yes, you can absolutely wear a color that isn’t traditionally “autumn.” If you love a lighter shade, a floral print, or a brighter jewel tone, you don’t need to rule it out just because the calendar says October.
The color I’d approach most carefully is white or anything that could be mistaken for bridal attire. If you’re unsure, choose a shade or print that clearly reads as a guest dress.
Can You Wear Black to a Fall Wedding?
Yes! A black dress can be a beautiful choice for a fall wedding, especially for an evening or more formal celebration.
Choose the style based on the dress code and venue. A little black midi can work beautifully for cocktail attire, while a long black gown can feel right at home at a formal or black-tie wedding.

What Fabrics Are Best for Fall Wedding Guest Dresses?
Fall gives you more fabric options than summer, which is one reason I love dressing for the season.
- Velvet: Perfect for cooler weather and evening weddings.
- Satin: Dressy, smooth, and gorgeous in rich autumn colors.
- Crepe: Polished and easy to dress up or down.
- Lace: A pretty choice for romantic fall weddings.
- Chiffon: Still works beautifully, especially with sleeves or a wrap.
You don’t need the heaviest fabric available. If the weather is mild, a lighter dress paired with a wrap, shawl, or jacket may be all you need.
Do You Have to Wear Sleeves to a Fall Wedding?
Nope!
Sleeves can be practical when the temperature drops, but they’re certainly not required. Sleeveless, one-shoulder, short-sleeve, and strappy dresses can all work for a fall wedding.
If you’re wearing a dress without sleeves to an outdoor ceremony, simply bring a shawl or wrap so you have an extra layer when the sun goes down.
What to Wear to an Outdoor Fall Wedding
For an outdoor fall wedding, check the weather before you leave and plan for the temperature to change throughout the day.
If it’s chilly, consider a dress with sleeves or choose a sleeveless style and add a wrap, shawl, or dressy jacket. Closed-toe shoes can also be more comfortable if you’ll be outside for a while.
And don’t forget the ground you’re walking on. If the ceremony is taking place on grass, heels with a thinner point can be a pain. A block heel or dressy flat may be much easier.
If rain is in the forecast, bring an umbrella and choose shoes you’re comfortable wearing outdoors. You can still look completely wedding-ready without spending the ceremony worrying about your outfit.
What Should You Wear to a Fall Wedding?
Start with the dress code, then let the season guide your styling. For fall weddings, midi and maxi dresses, richer colors, satin, velvet, lace, crepe, and dresses with sleeves are all great options. But you don’t have to wear a long-sleeved dress just because it’s autumn.
Think of fall as a styling cue, not a strict dress code.
