With just a few easy-to-find supplies, you can make your own wine basket for first milestones of the bride and groom. You’ll need wine (obviously), milestone wedding wine labels, a drink tub or chic basket, these cute wine glasses, filler / art tissue paper, a corkscrew, and a card. That’s it! You’ll also need a few tissues because the bride will definitely start sobbing when she reads these sweet labels. Read on for the details on how to make your own basket of firsts for the bride and groom!
DIY Basket of Firsts Gift Idea
A basket of firsts is a fun gift the couple will use all year long. Each wine bottle features a label with a first milestone on it, whether it be “first big purchase”, “First Christmas”, or, “first fight”. Here’s what you need to make your own basket of firsts.
Here’s what you need to get started.
-Wine (5 bottles)
Buy a few cheaper bottles and a few more expensive bottles. Try Walmart — there’s an insanely cheap wine there that tastes amazing, I forget the name but it’s literally $5. You can actually buy wine at Target now, too, as if you needed another reason to do a Target run. For the First Christmas wine label, I always recommend using Winter White by Leelenau Cellars. It runs around $6 and it’s actually quite amazing (hopefully they carry it by you).
If you’d like, you could also join a wine club (this premier series is great) and give bottles of wine from Napa and surrounding areas for the couple (a great idea, especially without having to travel!). One popular choice is the California Wine Club (you can join here).

-Milestone / “Firsts” Wine Bottle Labels
Obviously, a basket of firsts wine bottle gift is going to need these milestone wine bottle labels! These are highly rated and look fantastic on any bottle of wine you choose.
BASKET OF FIRSTS: MILESTONE WINE LABELS
The basket of firsts would not be complete without these milestone wine labels! In your pack, you’ll receive the following wine labels for the bride and groom to drink on or after…
First Christmas
First Fight
First Big Purchase
First Baby
First Anniversary
PRO TIP: HOW TO REMOVE WINE BOTTLE LABELS
Remove the previous label completely before applying the milestone wine bottle labels (it will look better). You can remove a wine bottle label with WD40 and tons of elbow grease, or give yourself a break and use this awesome stuff. It melts away like buttah. Just fill up a tub of warm water, some washing soda, and let it sit; your wine label will literally lift right off. #magic

-Basket
The basket you choose should be sturdy enough to hold five bottles of wine. Ideally, the basket you choose will have handles on either side (but it doesn’t have to, it just makes it easier to carry). Some popular choices are drink tubs (like this which I love — it says “cheers” on the front and is in white!), which couples can re-use at backyard BBQs and parties:

Or a galvanized tub, like this:

Another option is a wicker or rattan basket, like this one — which again can be re-used at home in the bathroom to hold towels or toiletries:

-Wine Glasses
Although not a requirement, these wine glasses really add to the entire basket of firsts gift and pulls it together. Simple, sweet, and really affordable, too:

-Wine Bottle Opener
This cute wine bottle opener / stopper looks adorable tied to the basket with a ribbon.

-Art Tissue Paper / Basket Filler
Next, you’ll want some art tissue paper or basket filler underneath the wine bottles. This just gives it a more cushion and makes your basket of firsts more presentable. You can get filler here (I recommend white), or colorful art tissue paper here (use their wedding colors or seasonal colors), or head to your local party store.

-Card
Last but not least, include a wedding card with a handwritten note inside. I love this sweet card from The First Snow:
FUN IDEA
In my basket of firsts, I also like to include these Tabletopics. It’s an extra gift inside the basket the couple will love — it’s a great way to get to know your spouse even better, and it’s fun for thoughtful conversation starters. Great for chatting over your bottle of wine. It’s one of the best wedding gifts ever.
