If you’re planning a casual wedding, let’s discuss your invitations! As a rule of thumb, your wedding invitations should always reflect the tone and theme of your wedding. For a casual wedding, your invitation should reflect the formality: fun and laid-back!
Bride-to-be, Whitney, wrote us with this question:
“Hi Emmaline! I want to pick out wedding invitations with informal undertones. Do you have any suggestions for casual wedding invite wording? Ours is going to be a small and modern wedding so I’m looking for something unique and more laid-back. Thanks for your help!”
Fantastic question, Whitney, and happy to steer you in the right direction. Casual wedding invite wording is so much easier when you have awesome examples to work with. Let’s get started with the difference between formal vs casual wedding invitation wording examples.
Formal vs Casual Wedding Invite Wording
Traditional
• The opening statement is very traditional, often something along the lines of this:
MR AND MRS [NAMES] REQUEST THE HONOR OF YOUR PRESENCE
AT THE MARRIAGE OF THEIR DAUGHTER
• Your first names, fully written out with first, middle, and last
• The ceremony date and time are written formally: “Wednesday, the Eighteenth of April” and “at Six O’Clock in the Evening”
Here’s an example of a formal invite (by Megan Davis):
• Wording, “Reception to Follow”
• Enclosure cards may include a formal dress code, lodging accommodations, and more
Informal
On the flip side, casual wedding invitations will have wording that differs largely and has a more laid-back feel.
Here are some ways you’ll know the difference.
• Opening line is playful and fun, i.e. “Let’s do this wedding thing!” or “Join us for the wedding of” as examples
• Your first names vs. fully written out
• Standard date and time, written as: “September 16, 2023” and “6:00pm”
• The Venues named on the card
• “Dinner and dancing to follow” vs. Formal Reception Wording
Now that you can see the clear difference of the two styles, let’s explore some casual invitation samples. These invites are templates you can edit yourself (just click on the design you love and go from there!) and change up the color, get FREE addressing, and so much more.
Let’s get to it!
