Hi, loves! Emma here. Today we’re answering another wonderful Ask Emmaline question from one of our readers! Bride-to-be, Jessie, wants to know what a fishtail wedding dress is and whether it is the same thing as a mermaid wedding dress silhouette. She writes,
“Hi Emmaline! What is a mermaid wedding dress? Is a fishtail wedding dress the same thing? What’s the difference between a mermaid style dress and a traditional gown?”
Hi Jessy! Wonderful question and thanks for writing. I love a mermaid/fishtail wedding dress and am quite familiar with its style. Here’s some additional info on what a mermaid dress is, along with some inspiration.
What Is A Mermaid / Fishtail Wedding Dress?
Most commonly referred to as a mermaid or fishtail wedding dress, this style is characterized by its fitted style and hugs your body close.
Most notably, a fishtail wedding dress doesn’t flare out at the waist like a ball gown or A-line wedding dress does. Rather, a mermaid wedding dress flares at or below the knee which creates a “fishtail” style. Some brides choose a long train with a fishtail gown, while others opt for a short train. That’s up to you! Both look elegant with this silhouette.
Here are a few examples of a fishtail wedding dress so you can see the style for yourself. These wedding dresses will look beautiful and they’re all handmade by an independent artist on Etsy! (Yay for supporting handmade!) You can also browse more wedding gowns here.
