How to Get a Custom Wedding Dress Made
First things first: should you get a custom wedding dress made, and even so, what is the cost of a custom wedding dress? Deciding whether to get a custom wedding dress made is a personal decision, but if you’ve wondered these questions then a custom wedding dress is probably the right choice for you. If you’ve tried on dresses at bridal shops, saved too many gowns on Pinterest to name, flipped through magazines, and you still can’t find the perfect one, a custom made wedding dress is a great alternative.
A custom wedding dress is often referred to as bespoke, which means a dress tailored to your expectations; this type of wedding dress is truly one-of-a-kind. A custom wedding dress is made exactly to your specifications right down to the fit, materials, and silhouette. Now this may sound like an incredible (and expensive) feat; however, that’s not necessarily the case. Actually, you can get a custom wedding dress made on budget — and it is actually within reach.
Cost of Custom Wedding Dress
For a custom wedding dress, the estimated cost varies greatly — anywhere between $1000 and $4000 (and up). But this number varies greatly depending on where you buy and what kind of wedding dress you’d like to have made for you. The cost of a custom wedding dress depends on many factors including (but not limited to) style, length, color, dress fabric, silhouette, train, neckline, sleeve, back, waist, and dress details (accent colors, beading, belt, bow, draping, embroidery, floral, lace, pleats, ruffles, sashes, or anything else you can imagine). And last but not least, the cost of a custom wedding dress varies on the designer — how experienced he or she is — as well as the amount of time it will take to make your dream wedding dress.
Want to know how to estimate the cost of a custom wedding dress? We’ve found this great cost estimator tool here. I tried it myself and made up an imaginary dress — traditional diamond white dress, floor-length, made of silk taffeta, sweep train, one-shoulder, strapless — ran about $1100 – $1400. It’s a great calculator, too, because you can even pinpoint your location for a more effective estimate.
How to Get a Custom Wedding Dress Made
Here is how to get a custom wedding dress made with five easy (and helpful!) tips.
1. Be realistic about your budget and leave wiggle room for “extras”.
Many brides forget to include the cost of alterations, which could run anywhere from $250 to $450. Alterations are really the finishing touch; if the dress isn’t perfectly tailored to your body shape and size, your dress won’t look as amazing as one professionally altered. Don’t forget to include this in your budget.
You’ll also need room in your budget for undergarments or shapers and accessories you plan to include with the dress. Some accessories to include are a bolero or wrap, a sash or belt, a bustle, your veil (or veil alternative), and your wedding shoes.
2. Start shopping early.
If you’re planning to have your wedding dress made, shop early! Go to multiple dress shops to at least get an idea of the silhouette you’d like to wear, become familiar with materials and textures, and see what style(s) you look best in. Take notes about which dresses you liked or didn’t like, and snap photos to share with your designer. These notes and photos will come in handy when designing your custom wedding dress.
Also, keep in mind that having a custom wedding dress made could take longer (due to amount of time it takes and depending on the designer’s schedule, too), so plan accordingly.
3. Choose a designer wisely.
Before you buy from a designer, do your research. Make sure he or she is in line with the style you’re considering for your wedding. Check out past wedding dress portfolios (often in a gallery online), and email or call the designer with any questions you may have. Find out their process, how long it takes, and check out social media accounts — you’ll find out a lot about a designer and his or her work from social media, especially their Instagram and Facebook feeds (where posts are extremely visual).

4. Don’t fall for overly affordable prices.
When you have a budget in mind, it can be tempting to say — oh! I can get this dress for way below budget! — but be cautious where you spend your money. Budget prices can sometimes (not always!) mean less experience, or poor customer service. And sometimes you might feel like your dress was so cheap it almost feels less special when wearing it. But if you pay a little bit more (we’re not saying go nuts), you may be happier with the dress or have the opportunity to work with a designer whom you really admire. And while price is still important to keep in mind, you want to love the dress you choose no matter what it costs, so trust your gut. Sometimes a budget item costs more in the long run if you end up not getting what you really want (and have to scramble to fix it at the last minute).
And, perhaps the most important tip for how to get a custom wedding dress made on budget is… be honest about your budget. Be direct with the designer about how much you realistically can spend. This way, he or she can determine what your best dream design would be, what is possible, what you can skip, and what style will suit you (and your budget) best. Professional designers also know which fabrics are most cost-effective versus luxurious, so you can work together to design a custom wedding dress that fits your style — and your budget.

Happy Planning!

It’s nice to know that your dress won’t look as amazing if it’s not tailored to fit your body. A friend of mine is planning to wear her friend’s wedding dress since there were issues with the one she was going to get. I’ll have to let her know that she should think about getting it tailored to fit her body.
