OK: how soon is too soon to send out wedding invites? And… how late is too late?! We’ll help you find the timeline that’s just right with today’s blog post! Let’s hit it!
How Soon To Send Out Wedding Invites
The date is set, your guests are already super-excited over the fun save the dates you sent, and you’re eager to send out your invitations.
But how soon should you send out your wedding invites?
Send them too early and they’ll get lost in the shuffle of regular mail. Send them too late and some guests won’t be able to make it.
Here’s the perfect timeline of sending out your wedding invitations (and when to order them so they’re ready to go!)
How Soon To Send Wedding Invitations
Ideally, you’ll want to mail out your wedding invitations 6 to 8 weeks before the big day. For international travelers, send wedding invites out 12 weeks ahead of your wedding date.
Here’s a breakdown of the months and when to mail out the wedding invitations.
Your specific date will vary, depending on the DATE of your wedding, so just look to a calendar and count back 6 to 8 weeks (I prefer 8 weeks, plenty of time!) and there’s your perfect window for how soon to send out wedding invites.
For instance, we got married on December 5th (2008), so we mailed ours out the week of October 13th.
Here’s a general chart:
GETTING MARRIED IN…. // HOW SOON TO SEND OUT WEDDING INVITES
February // Mail them out in December
March // Send out wedding invites no later than January
April // Mail those bad boys in February
May // Get ’em stamped + out the door in March
June // Mail ’em like they’re hot in April
July // Wedding invitations should be mailed in May
August // Get them sent out in June
September // Mail your wedding invitations by July
October // Send your invitations in August
November // Send out wedding invitations by September
December // Mail your wedding invites in October

Pros of Sending Wedding Invitations on Time
If you stay within this mailing window, you’ll benefit from:
• More guests will be able to attend
Travel arrangements are easier in advance, as well as other accommodations (time off of work, babysitters lined up, hotel rooms booked, etc.) if needed
• You’ll save money
If you order wedding invitations in advance and mail them out on time, you’ll save money on buying too many wedding favors, programs, escort cards, etc. that you won’t really need
• You can get more tasks completed
Get started on that seating chart faster, figure out how you’ll arrange your tables, etc. ahead of schedule!
• You can invite more guests
If you follow this schedule of how soon to send out wedding invitations, you can actually invite more guests. If you mail invites out 8 weeks in advance, and someone RSVPs with a no, you are able to then fill that space with another guest whom you wanted to invite (but there was simply not enough room). This is a bonus, as your budget stays the same but you’re able to fill the empty seat with another guest who may be able to attend. Just be sure to send those invites no later than 6 weeks before the wedding, or they’ll appear to be on a “B” list as an afterthought, and that’s not fun.
• Less stress
Sending out wedding invitations is a big, stressful part of your checklist. Many couples sweat about it because they don’t want something to go wrong with invites, like them coming back undelivered, or postage being incorrect or forgetting to send one out… and various other wedding invitation mistakes that arise.
You’ll also have time to get free samples of invites in your hand, so you know EXACTLY how they’ll look before you order them.
But the sooner you send out wedding invites, the better off you’ll be — there’s always a little time to fix any problems that may arise, send out those last-minute invitations (without appearing late), and correcting a mailing address problem with time to re-send that invitation.
Cons of Sending Wedding Invitations on Time
• None
Sending them out on time has zero negatives! (More time to relax, a big win if you ask me!)
TL;DR
Six to eight weeks is the magic window of when to send wedding invitations! ;)
And there you have it: the nitty-gritty of how soon to send out wedding invites. What do you think? Are you on schedule with yours?
Happy Planning!
