Brides, today we’re talking about a topic that many engaged couples don’t think about: wedding insurance. What does wedding insurance cover? Should you get it? When should you get wedding insurance? We’ve done some research thanks to the folks at Markel Event Insurance and we’re bringing it all to you today! Read on to learn more…
What Does Wedding Insurance Cover?
What is Wedding Insurance?
There are two types of wedding insurance. Wedding Cancellation Insurance helps prevent you from losing non-refundable deposits if you have to cancel or postpone your wedding due to unforeseen circumstances. Wedding Liability Insurance protects you from expensive liability lawsuits if an accident happens at your wedding (or on the way home from your wedding), or there is property damage to your venue during your event.
What Does Wedding Insurance Cover?
What does wedding insurance cover? Each insurance policy is different, so make sure you read over the coverages and policy terms of what is and isn’t covered before you buy. For instance, here are a few things that wedding cancellation insurance covers from Markel:
1. Cancellation of Wedding in the Event of Extreme Weather
If your wedding is canceled due to extreme weather conditions (like a hurricane), you’re covered. You and your groom would be able to recoup all of the lost deposits and nonrefundable amounts if the weather takes a turn for the worse on your big day and it prevents the majority of your guests from attending the wedding.
2. The Bride and Groom’s Attire
Your fiancé moved 2 days before your wedding and now cannot find his tux? Don’t worry, if any of your wedding attire is lost, stolen or damaged before the wedding, you would be covered (note: some exclusions apply, so don’t think about spilling fruit punch on your wedding gown if you suddenly decided you want a new dress)
3. Honeymoon Expenses
You had to cancel your wedding, so what happens to your honeymoon? With Markel’s Wedding Cancellation coverage, any non-recoverable expenses for travel and accommodations for your honeymoon are covered.
4. Wedding Rings
Imagine, you are checking off last minute “to do” items off of your list (like giving your wedding rings to your best man), when you suddenly cannot find your wedding rings. Don’t panic, if you purchased Markel’s Wedding Cancellation coverage, you would be covered (but only for a limited time). Wedding rings are covered if they are lost in the seven days prior to your wedding. After your wedding, you should insure them as part of your renter or homeowner’s insurance policy.
5. Lost or Damaged Photography
Yikes – what happens if your photography is lost or damaged after your big day? Unfortunately you cannot recreate your wedding to make your wedding memories all over again, but Markel will help provide coverage if your photos are lost or damaged before your photographer gives you your pictures. Please note, Markel will not cover photographer error (such as under or overexposure), so make sure when you are hiring your photographer, you know and like their photo techniques.
These are just a few things covered under Markel’s wedding insurance. To see the full list of what’s covered, visit this page.
Don’t forget about Wedding Liability Insurance! More and more venues are starting to require wedding liability insurance (like art museums, wineries, recep tion halls, etc.) and Markel has that too for as little as $75. They’ve seriously thought of everything.
When Should You Get Wedding Insurance?
Wedding insurance does not cover everything and it is not for everyone. However, it can be a huge help on your wedding day in case you need it. If you are planning to buy wedding insurance, Markel Event Insurance recommends buying a policy as soon as you put down any deposits.
