Wedding Garters

Do you plan to wear a garter? A wedding garter isn’t required, but it’s a popular accessory for the bride to have. Today, when a couple participates in the garter toss, the groom removes the bride’s garter and tosses it to a group of unmarried men. The man who catches the garter is to then place it on the leg of the unmarried woman who catches the bouquet. Based on tradition, this man and woman are the next to marry (not necessarily to each other).

If you’re shy about having your wedding garter removed in front of everyone, skip the toss (you can still wear the garter anyway). If you think having your garter removed in front of everyone is embarrassing, have you ever heard of the origin of the garter? Apparently in the 1800’s, the garter toss happened in the newlywed’s bedroom. After consummation, the garter was tossed and a family member would pick it up as “proof” of consummation. Awkward.

Thankfully, that’s in the past, and today the garter toss isn’t a requirement, just a fun tradition. Still, many brides love the idea of wearing a beautiful garter as a keepsake from her wedding day.

Wedding garters are a perfect item to have made for you because they’re custom made to fit.

A garter doesn’t have to be boring. Look for a garter that incorporates feathers, rhinestones, a vintage brooch, or a favorite pop of color.
