Are birdcage veils in style? That’s the latest question in our Ask Emmaline inbox from bride-to-be, Sherry. (P.S. We’re loving these wonderful questions that keep pouring in! You can submit your Ask Emmaline question via Instagram (where this one originated) by clicking “Contact” in our Instagram profile. Or send it in here.) Sherry loves the style of birdcage veils in photos, but she wonders if it is the right style for her wedding. She writes,
“I see a lot of birdcage veils on brides in magazines and on Pinterest, and I love the style. But I’m not sure if I could pull off the look or if my wedding theme (classic) isn’t vintage enough for this look. Are birdcage veils in style? Also I have short hair, will a birdcage veil work with my hairstyle? Thanks!”
Are Birdcage Veils in Style?
Great question, Sherry! First things first: are birdcage veils in style? YES! I give it a loud, resounding, holy-cow-we-love-them-so kind of yes. We continue to see birdcage veils everywhere in the wedding market. But you’re absolutely right: a birdcage veil isn’t for everyone, just like a black netting veil isn’t for everyone, not every bride wants to wear hot pink heels, and not everyone looks good in red lipstick (no matter how many times I’ve tried. Boo.) But that just keeps things interesting in weddings: no two are ever exactly the same. One veil doesn’t work for everyone simply because each bride has her own unique style. And last time I checked, there’s no rule that states you can’t wear a birdcage veil if you want to. Regarding your question about birdcage veils in style for every theme — yes. You can wear a birdcage veil in ANY wedding theme; just know what style of birdcage veil to choose. For instance, choose a birdcage veil with French netting and an angled silhouette for a modern wedding, like this:
For a vintage wedding, a birdcage veil with an antique brooch will tie in perfectly. For a beach wedding, brides will often select a birdcage veil with very little embellishment; this is so the veil doesn’t get in the way during the vows (beaches are notoriously windy and most long veils don’t want to cooperate during a beach ceremony). And for your hairstyle: any style will do! Just wear your hair the way you feel most comfortable. (P.S. See also: How to Wear a Birdcage Veil for more tips on wearing birdcage veils.)
So, let’s do some visualizing here to see what will look best on you. To help, we’re bringing in veils by expert, Dorene Lenore of Unveiled Bridal Designs. We’ll showcase a few of our favorite designs from her latest collection, specifically sharing her birdcage veils / French netting veils. You could find dozens of birdcage veils online, but Dorene’s veils are in a class all their own. She has been designing veils of all styles — including but not limited to birdcage veils — for 27 years. To say she is an expert in veil designing is an understatement! But she’s not just an incredible bridal veil designer: she’s passionate about working with brides and dedicates her time to “each veil, fascinator, beading cluster or hat that she creates”. She’ll even help you with placement of your veil: she will contact you after your order to go over photos of hair trials, head shots, and any other information she may need to make sure she creates a cut that fits you nicely. She knows that head size is also important for fit, so she’ll make your veil totally custom according to your head size. That’s above and beyond! (Ah, these handmade artists, you guys: the heart of handmade weddings, we say! ♥)
Anyways, let’s take a peek at her work, shall we? There are many veils in her shop, but here are some of our favorite birdcage veils in style for any theme. We’ve found a few different designs including French netting veils, birdcage veils in black, birdcage veils with fascinators, and more. Enjoy!
