Do you really need a wedding cake server? That’s the question we received this weekend from bride-to-be, Kristina. She asks,
“I’m ordering decorations for my wedding reception and it occurred to me that I don’t have a wedding cake server for the cake cutting. I’ve seen them in wedding photos but I don’t know if I really need a cake server or if they’re just photo props. I don’t want to buy things I don’t really need, so your advice is most appreciated. Thanks!”
Do you need a cake server?
Great question, Kristina! We’re with you on not wanting to buy things you don’t necessarily need for your big day. The answer to your question: yes, you do need a cake server for the sake of functionality. Your cake server will cut your cake and will be prominently displayed on your cake table and in your photos. You CAN cut the cake with something other than an “official” cake server (one bride reported grabbing a nearby butter knife) but, unless you don’t mind a butter knife in your photos, we recommend a wedding cake server.
However, just because you NEED a cake server for functionality sake, that doesn’t mean you have to buy your own cake sever. One of the best things about planning your wedding is realizing you don’t have to do anything. You get to decide everything from start to finish. You technically NEED a cake server, but you have a few options on how to go about it. First, decide if you want a cake server of your own. A cake server is nice to have, and it is one keepsake you’ll actually use again after the wedding. I don’t regularly wear my bridal heels around town, or display our edible wedding favors in the china cabinet, or put on my garter, etc. But there may come a time when you serve cake or pie or brownies or a giant chocolate chip cookie and you will want to serve it nicely when company comes over.
If that sounds like you, you’ll definitely want a cake server of your very own. Now, the cake server you choose can be anything you want it to be.
You can opt for something vintage inspired…
… beach-themed…
… rustic…
… shabby chic…
… or modern!
If you want something totally custom, look for a design that coordinates with your wedding theme and features engraving, like this one:
We love seasonal finds, like this autumn inspired cake server…
… or this server for winter…
You could choose a cake server painted white…
… features Something Blue…
… or is dipped in gold!
There are so many incredible cake servers to choose from, in any theme, color, or style!

And, on the other hand, if you are neutral about owning one, or it doesn’t fit into your budget, ask your grandparents, parents, or newly married friends if they have a cake server you can borrow. Or ask your venue if they have one you can use or rent. This one is very inexpensive and basic, that’s sometimes all you need!

I love the glitter one! I need to get a cake server bc my reception hall doesn’t have one that can display. The use a simple knife and server but I want something that will look good in photos. Great round up!
I’m borrowing my cake server from my grandparents. It is a family heirloom they used on their own wedding day. Great ideas here!
