Brides: have you wondered how to calligraph? Would you like to tackle do-it-yourself projects with pretty writing, but your penmanship could use a little work? Today’s feature is for you! I was talking to a friend recently about the lost art of letter writing. Email and text messages have stripped away some of the heartfelt, personal snail mail letters that used to fill mailboxes with happiness (and, snail mail is pretty much one of the greatest things ever). One of the things I’ve always wanted to learn is how to do calligraphy, known as “the art of making beautiful handwriting”. For weddings, you can use calligraphy on your invitations, wedding programs, menus, escort cards, place cards, signage… there are so many places for pretty penmanship! Read on to find out how you can learn how to calligraph in your hometown with a workshop or at home with an awesome new starter kit…
How to Calligraphy
Have you seen some of the lovely calligraphy work by Laura Hooper Calligraphy? We’ve shared some of our favorites in the past, but today we’re sharing something new. Laura is a professional calligrapher and she has embarked on a new adventure: sharing how to calligraph with other enthusiasts. She teaches calligraphy workshops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York City and Austin. If you live in one of these areas, you can sign up for a workshop near you!
This looks more like a fun calligraphy party than your average class, don’t you think? :)
If you don’t live near a workshop (or you’d rather learn at home), Laura also offers a take-home starter kit so you can learn how to calligraph at your own pace.
The calligraphy starter kit comes with everything you need to learn classic copperplate and other more modern fonts. Kits include an oblique pen holder, nibs, black ink, white ink, personalized journal for doodling, vellum tracing paper, gridline practice sheets, three alphabets and instructional tips and techniques by Laura, and one signature Laura Hooper Calligraphy print for practice tracing.
