Wondering where to find the best handwritten calligraphy wedding invitations? Just look to Laura Hooper Calligraphy! We’re talking to Laura and Alyssa of Laura Hooper Calligraphy, this week’s Featured Artist studio spotlight. P.S. Subscribe now so you never miss a post!
Hi lovelies, Emma here! I’ll never forget the moment I stumbled upon the handwritten calligraphy by Laura Hooper Calligraphy, sometime back in 2009. I distinctly recall how unique her wedding invitations were compared to traditional printed invites found elsewhere. Laura’s invitations are set apart from others; each handwritten invitation features delicate curves and punctuation marks and swashes so intricately penned by hand. You can tell she puts her whole heart into each printed piece.
Fast forward a few years later and I’m still an avid fan of Laura’s calligraphy. She and her business partner (and sister), Alyssa, have built their successful calligraphy business from the ground up. Their passion and commitment to excellence is their utmost priority; you know a company really cares about its clients when they offer handwritten calligraphy services and go a step above to teach you how to do it yourself with diy hand-calligraphy kits.
They also offer workshops for people interested in how to write calligraphy.

Laura and Alyssa have also released a book on handwritten calligraphy (see it here) entitled Wedding Calligraphy: A Guide to Beautiful Lettering. It looks beautiful! It was released just a few weeks ago:

As you can see, Laura Hooper Calligraphy goes above and beyond, and that’s why we’re so thrilled to have them as a Featured Artist here at Emmaline Bride and in our Studio Spotlight this week. Handwritten Calligraphy Wedding Invitations & More: An Interview with Laura Hooper Calligraphy
Our interview with Laura of Laura Hooper Calligraphy is below.
We’re excited to chat with you about Laura Hooper Calligraphy! When did you launch your business? Where are you based?
“Our shop officially opened in November 2001. We are based in Alexandria, Virginia.”
Tell us how your business got started.
“When I was in my early 20s my friend got married and since I wasn’t in her wedding, I offered to address her envelopes. After that my dad referred me to his co-worker’s daughter, my sister referred me to her boss and the rest took off by word of mouth. I was working a corporate 9-5 at the time and had no idea I would be able to pursue calligraphy & stationery full time, but once I got to the point where I was bringing in the minimum needed each month to get by, I made the jump and next looked back. ”
Tell us more about your team.
“My business partner {and sister!} Alyssa handles all of our day-to-day logistics including client communication, scheduling and logistics for all of our beginner workshops, keeping my work schedule and our other business operations in general. We also have a team that checks my handwritten work, packs and ships orders from our shop, and ships all of our materials for workshops around the US.”
What products does Laura Hooper Calligraphy offer?
“Laura Hooper Calligraphy really has three operations. The first of course is handwritten calligraphy, custom maps & printed stationery for weddings. This is what I have been doing for 15 years and how the business really started. Over the past four years we have branched into teaching the art of modern pointed pen as well. In addition to our in-person workshops around the US, we also offer a comprehensive beginner calligraphy kit as well as all of my preferred calligraphy supplies in our online shop. Our blog is filled weekly with business & calligraphy tips for other aspiring calligraphers and small business owners. The third arm of the business came about because my family loves getting together and making every holiday and celebration a real “event.” This led us to ultimately develop a line of party goods featuring my calligraphy. We now offer greeting cards, napkins, coasters and more for weddings, baby & bridal showers, happy hours – any celebration can be kicked up a notch with some gold foil party goods!”
What is your best-selling product right now?
“Our beginner calligraphy kit + video tutorial bundle.”
