First, let’s talk about why bridesmaids wearing different dresses is a good thing.
Bridesmaids Wear Different Dresses?
For many years, the bride chose one dress and all bridesmaids wore it. This means if it was a halter, you wore a halter. Strapless? It’s going to be strapless for everyone. If you wanted everyone to wear a giant bow on the back, then… well, you get the idea.
If you didn’t like how you looked in a strapless, or you couldn’t bear the idea of a mermaid cut dress, it was too bad. That was the dress! And while that is still the case for many weddings, some brides are being super-cool and reasonable by having their bridesmaids wear something they adore!
We love that!
Times have changed and, thankfully for many bridesmaids, dresses have drastically changed. It no longer seems like the bride is competing for attention and chooses an ugly bridesmaid dress so she can look better than her ‘maids… but rather chooses different bridesmaid dresses each woman can wear that suit her unique curves, silhouette, or style.
When you let bridesmaids wear different dresses, you’re still facilitating the style by choosing a color you love, or a color within a certain palette that will accentuate your wedding colors. However, you’re giving them the freedom to choose a different dress that suits their shape best.
Two Best Places for Different Dresses
If you’re picking out different dresses for bridesmaids, I recommend two places:
• Lulus
and
If your bridesmaids wear dresses that are different rather than all the same, they’ll be more confident walking down the aisle because they’ll be wearing a dress they selected, with your input, of course.
For example, you can choose jewel tones like these and bridesmaids can opt for which color she wishes to wear.
Try this style and fashion guide for color inspo. It’s very helpful.
As you can see, the bride is still in charge, but now bridesmaids can wear different dresses that are stylish and suited for each woman’s size. We think that is a wonderful thing!
Bridesmaid Dresses Different Color
So, how does this work, exactly? How do you give bridesmaids the freedom to choose different dresses and still make it look cohesive? It’s easy.
How To Have Bridesmaids Wear Different Dresses
There are two ways to do it:
• Bridesmaid Dresses: Different Color
You choose a range or palette of colors from which to choose and bridesmaids can select a dress in any of those colors.
• Bridesmaid Dresses: Same Color, Different Styles
This one is easy enough: choose one color and bridesmaids can wear different dresses in the same shade. I love this option because it is so much easier to visualize. For my sister’s wedding, I was the Maid of Honor and she chose navy blue. How easy and perfect is that?! Each bridesmaid could wear any dress in navy blue and it looked incredible. We had bridesmaid dresses that were different, but looked so nice together in photos and walking down the aisle.
Bridesmaid Dresses Same Color Different Styles
Suppose you want champagne bridesmaid dresses, but you want your bridal party attendants to choose their favorite style. Great! It’s easier than ever when you shop by color here and then she can select a style that flatters her best.
In this way, your bridesmaids will all be decked out in the same color, but have different styles of dresses.
Choose Different Bridesmaid Dresses in the Same Length
The only advice I recommend here is to make sure your bridesmaid dresses are the same length. I think you can pull off the look of different dresses, but when the length is the same for everyone it definitely looks more cohesive in photos and walking down the aisle when everyone chooses midi bridesmaid dresses, floor-length, or knee-length dresses vs. everyone in something different. Just a tip! :)
Now that you know how to do it, let’s take a look at some examples! You can get bridesmaid dresses that are different but look great together from David’s Bridal or Lulus. Both have amazing options in a variety of different colors and styles for bridesmaids.
