Do you need place cards at your wedding, or can you do without them? In this blog post, I’ll share the two main purposes of place cards so you can decide whether you are required to have them or if you can skip it.
Let’s get started!
The Purpose of a Place Card
A place card is one of the most essential day-of stationery pieces. But it’s not necessarily required for everyone. Here’s how to know the different, starting with what it is, exactly.
What is a place card?
At its most basic definition, a place card tells guests which seat is theirs at a table. The card is tented (i.e. folded to stand upright on its own). It typically looks something like this:
It looks very nice and elegant, so don’t overlook its beauty by itself. A place card is a lovely thing to have. It adds a nice, personal touch to your wedding decor.
Here’s the reasons why you may need place cards.
The Purpose of Place Cards
There are two main reasons to use place cards at your wedding.
– Assign Seats at Each Table
If you want guests to have assigned seats at tables, you will need place cards.
But a place card has a very important other use, which many couples don’t know about:
– Meal Options
If you have meal options, you will need place cards.
Place cards are used to indicate a meal choice on the back of the card. And since drawing 100 miniature pictures of chicken, beef, or fish is time-consuming (ha!), I recommend adding meal stickers on the back of each one, based on which meal the guest selected on their RSVP card.
TL:DR;
So, let’s recap:
– You’re likely having assigned tables, but if you also want SEATS to be assigned, you need place cards.
– If you’re having plated meal options at your wedding, you need place cards.
Otherwise, feel free to skip ’em! Although I think they do add a nice decorative touch, so don’t overlook that aspect of it, too. :)
And now you know!
WHERE TO SHOP: My go-to for place cards is Minted. Rather than purchasing the cards and then having to write the names yourself (as it is with most stores), you get FREE guest names printed on the cards with your order. Brilliant! Plus, the quality of the paper used on the cards is premium and the ink always comes out looking so pretty. They have many designs: check them out here!
I hope it helps!
