Hi, lovelies! This wedding question comes to us from bride-to-be, Lindsey, who wants to know if she needs a bridal garter for her wedding. This is a good question, as some brides are ditching more traditional customs. She writes,
“Hi Emmaline! My mom was asking me if I bought a garter yet for my wedding, which is coming up in January. I haven’t even thought getting one, although I have heard of them and seen them before. We’re not doing a garter toss, so do I really need a bridal garter?”
Do You Need a Bridal Garter?
Great question, Lindsey! And thanks for writing. Ah, yes, a common question: do you need a bridal garter? I asked myself the same thing when planning my wedding. We did a bridal garter toss, but we didn’t do a bridal garter removal. Instead, I had the groom toss my garter to the crowd of bachelors and one of them caught it; the guy who caught the garter then danced with the woman who caught the bouquet.
As with all things in your wedding, whether you really need one or want one is really up to you. Personally, I think every bride should have a bridal garter. It’s one of those last classic / traditional customs that I think is fun to continue. No one other than your spouse really has to see it, but it is an accessory that is nice to have from your wedding and makes you feel like a bride, similar to the bridal veil or veil alternative, gown, and additional accessories you choose — like shoes.
A bridal garter — or even bridal garter sets, where you get a single garter to wear along with a tossing garter to throw, so you keep yours — is not expensive, so if you want to add one it’s not a hit to your budget. There are wonderful sellers on Etsy that offer handmade garters in any color, style, theme, etc. you can imagine.
This is an example of a set: one to keep, one to toss.
Today we’ll show you some traditional bridal garter sets and individual examples to give you inspiration. I think any of these would look beautiful and make a lasting keepsake for your wedding day. To top it off, you can choose one of these something blue bridal garter sets to serve as your “something blue” on your wedding day. Win-win.
These garters are handmade by Love + Peony from Etsy. We’ve picked a mix of styles to choose from, including single garter and double bridal garter sets for tossing. If buying as a gift, you’ll love how it arrives in this beautiful gift box, also great for safe-keeping after the wedding.
