Plus, someone asked us: “who puts a Sixpence in the bride’s shoe?” We’ll tell you more about that below. Enjoy!
Something Old, New, Borrowed, Blue, Sixpence Tradition
First, let’s talk about the Sixpence wedding poem.
It goes like this:
“Something old
Something New
Something Borrowed
Something Blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe”
Tradition believes if the bride has all of these things on her wedding day, it is good luck for a long and happy marriage.
Something Old
For something old, it can be anything: a pair of vintage earrings, a brooch pinned to your clutch purse, etc. For my wedding, I wore my mother’s veil.
Something New
Something new? That’s easy! This will most likely be your wedding dress. It can also be your pair of shoes, hair accessories, veil, jewelry, etc.
Something Borrowed
Something Borrowed is something you’ll ask someone to lend you for the day. Mine was my mother’s clutch purse from her wedding (it as fabulous!) Use it for the day and then give it back to its owner. Yours can be anything: a pretty ring, bracelet, pair of earrings, or veil, just to name a few examples.
Something Blue
Something Blue is a little trickier, but a lot of fun. You can choose to wear blue shoes, sew a heart patch inside the inner layer of your gown, blue decals on the bottoms of your shoes, blue jewelry, or blue ribbon wrapped around your bouquet.
For my wedding, I wore a garter with a little blue bow on it.
Silver Sixpence
And… ah, the silver sixpence in her shoe. This one is the tough one people always have questions about! Where can you buy a wedding sixpence? Who gives the bride her sixpence? Who puts the sixpence in her shoe? Based on tradition, the father of the bride or mother of the bride puts the sixpence in her shoe. Or the sixpence can be given to her as a gift and the bride can place it inside her shoe on the day of the wedding.
It doesn’t really matter who puts the sixpence in the shoe — to follow tradition, it just has to be in there! :)
Now, let’s talk about where to buy a silver sixpence. We just found out where to buy 2020 silver sixpence coins, which are harder to find: they are available from The Coin Art Company!
Here are examples of the wedding sixpence coin gift set you can buy, which includes a card (personalized with your name on the top!) which has the sixpence wedding poem written out. You can choose a year for the sixpence based on the options here.
