It’s important to pick the right kind of heel, a closed toe option (if possible), it’s OK to wear boots, and sometimes flats can be a girl’s best friend. :)

• Choose the Right Heel: When in doubt, select a block heel. Block heels are easier to walk in when the terrain is snowy, icy, or uneven. It’s much easier to walk into a ceremony or reception space in a sturdy block heel in the winter versus a stiletto heel.

• Closed Toe: You can wear open-toe shoes, but in the winter, you may want to avoid them. It’s so cold and blustery, so a closed toe heel or bootie is a much more suitable choice. This is particularly true if you’ll be walking in any snow throughout the evening, since your toes will be absolutely freezing in a pair of open toe heels.

If you can’t go completely closed-toe, opt for a peep toe instead. And if you want to wear open toe, it’s OK but wear a pair of nylons or tights underneath so your toes won’t freeze.

• Wear Boots: It is perfectly OK to wear boots as winter wedding guest shoes. But the boots should be dressy boots, like a pair of short booties or ankle booties, and not the kind of boots you’ll wear to trudge through inches of snow. The boots should be formal, clean, and complement your winter guest outfit.

When in doubt, opt for a pair of heels instead.

• Flats: Flats are OK, but look for a pair with really great traction. Ideally, you won’t want to wear a flat without a pair of tights or nylons underneath, since your feet will be too cold.
