When I receive an invitation, one of the first things I consider is: what am I going to wear? I’m always looking for the best wedding guest dresses for the occasion.

With many dress styles, types of weddings, and dress codes to consider, it’s overwhelming to decide what to wear to a wedding as a guest. I feel that way sometimes, too! You don’t want to make a mistake and wear the wrong outfit; furthermore, you want to look spectacular in any wedding guest dress you choose.

To help you dress the part, I made this list: a spectacular round-up of the best wedding guest dresses for any type of wedding in 2024.

I was searching for what to wear to a wedding and the search results that popped up were seriously lacking. I figure other women like me feel the same way, so… I made my own list! I hope this dress guide helps you decide exactly what to wear to a wedding (as it has helped me) and provides you with more options.

What to Wear to a Wedding As a Guest

First, let’s chat briefly about dress code guest etiquette tips, just in case you want/need a few suggestions.

When deciding what to wear to a wedding, these four suggestions will keep you on good dress code footing as a guest in 2024, no matter what season or style of wedding.

1. Follow the dress code.

If there is a dress code e.g. cocktail, black tie, semi-formal, formal, or casual, follow it as closely as possible. If you need a cue on formality, use the invitation as your guide. Also, navigate to the couple’s wedding website to look for a possible dress code, if you’re unclear, or consider the venue and time of day to decide the best outfit you should wear as a guest.

What do you wear to a wedding if you don’t know the dress code?

When in doubt, your best option is to follow a cocktail dress code. What is cocktail attire for women? Great question: it means to dress up, but don’t choose a female guest outfit that is too formal. This means a dressy jumpsuit, cocktail dress, mini, or maxi guest dress, and add accessories to dress up your look (think jewelry, a fun evening bag, and a nice pair of heels).

2. Consider the season.

Wear an ensemble that is in line with the particular season in style, length, and color. Be sure to avoid pastels in winter, and don’t wear deep rich jewel tones in the spring. Choose a fabric that is warm in the winter (like velvet); err on the side of a lightweight chiffon dress in the summer months.

Dress appropriately for the weather: don’t wear a long-sleeve dress in the humid summer, and don’t wear a mini dress in the winter without a wrap or shawl. Also, be mindful of the floral patterns you select. There are certain prints that do better in summer vs. winter, and I’ll guide you on those later on in this blog post.

3. Don’t wear anything too short or skimpy.

A good rule of thumb and proper etiquette for wedding guest attire is to avoid anything too revealing, short, or skimpy. You don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself and upstage the bride.

4. Don’t wear white.

A wedding guest outfit should never include the color white, ivory, champagne, etc. as it is the bride’s color to wear on her wedding day. Don’t even be tempted to wear an outfit that has a pattern with mostly white on it; avoid at all costs!

I also recommend you avoid bright red. Other shades of red are appropriate for wedding guests to wear — burgundy, merlot, wine, just to name a few — but bright red has a tendency to attract attention, particularly in photos. Did you know that? It means the eye is drawn to your outfit first, which the bride may not appreciate when her photos return. Just an FYI!
