What is the difference between cotton vs. linen handkerchiefs? Which fabric is better for weddings? Today we’re talking about the difference and which one makes a better gift for your wedding day.
This blog post was inspired by a wedding question from Ashlee, who wants to know what kind of handkerchief to buy for her wedding. She wants to give a groom gift on the morning of the wedding, but she’s stuck on this question: should she surprise him with a cotton or linen handkerchief?
She writes,
“Dear Emmaline Bride, I’m planning to buy my groom a morning of a wedding gift and it is a handkerchief (plus a small bag with a wristwatch and a card). For the handkerchief, I’m not sure if I should get cotton vs linen. Which is suitable for a wedding or which one is better? Thank you!”
First of all, great question, and I love the choice of groom gift you’ve selected! A handkerchief, a watch, and a card from you?! Great picks! :)
Now, let’s talk cotton vs linen handkerchief.
Cotton or Linen Handkerchief
The best type of handkerchief for weddings is… linen! If we’re being specific here, choose a 100% Irish linen handkerchief.
Why?
Unlike cotton, linen handkerchiefs offer a crisp, cool texture that absorbs more water.
Cotton handkerchiefs have a slow absorption speed and take longer to dry. That’s not ideal for happy tears, now, is it? ;)
Plus, if you are sensitive to allergens, linen handkerchiefs are best. Cotton is extremely easy for dust and allergens to get trapped inside it, but linen has larger spaces (so fewer allergens or particles can get trapped).
Linen is suitable for any season, but is especially wonderful in the summer, as it can withstand high heat and is stronger. Cotton can wear down easily, but that is not the case with linen. Instead, Irish linen is strong, it gets better with use, and it lasts longer than cotton handkerchiefs.
It ages like a fine wine, like leather or your marriage! ;)
Now that you know which handkerchief material is best for your wedding, let’s show you some places to find him a wedding day handkerchief.
We spotted these Irish linen hankies (plus a bow tie and pocket square set that I think you may really like!) in oatmeal from Broiderie Stitch.
Oatmeal linen is a popular choice, as it really pops with deep colors such as black, forest green, and brown. The examples below are 100% fine Irish linen, undyed and natural. They look beautiful and can be completely customized to suit your needs. (You can contact Jackie to work with her on a custom order. She is happy to help!)
Note: These are all shown in oatmeal linen.
1. Oatmeal Linen Handkerchief with Two Initials
You can get this beautiful handkerchief featuring two initials in your choice of embroidery thread color. Available here.
2. Sweetheart Handkerchief with Date, Initials, and Heart
This is my favorite from the collection and easily one of the top wedding day gifts for the bride or groom. Shop here.
3. Embroidered Name Hankie
You can get a full name beautifully embroidered on this Irish linen handkerchief. Shown in oatmeal. Shop here.
4. Classic Script Monogram
This dapper handkerchief features one single monogram in your choice of thread. I love the contrast of the oatmeal linen with this pop of red. Shop here.
5. Men’s Bowtie and Irish Linen Pocket Square
This last suggestion isn’t a linen handkerchief, but a pocket square instead! Now, you wouldn’t use a pocket square as a handkerchief, as it is more for show. However, this set makes a wonderful gift and we love the matching bow tie for the groom.
